How do I move a WordPress site to Tremhost?

Let us do it. Moves from another cPanel host are free with any Tremhost hosting plan, most sites are moved within 24 hours of us getting working access, and your site stays live until the copy on our servers has been tested. Moves from hosts without cPanel are quoted first.

Let us move it (free from cPanel)

  1. Choose a plan. Web hosting if you look after WordPress yourself, or managed WordPress if you want us to handle updates, backups and security.
  2. Tell us what to move. Use the form on Move to Tremhost or open a ticket. We need access to your current host’s cPanel, or a full cPanel backup, and a list of mailboxes if your email moves too. We’ll tell you how to share the login safely.
  3. We copy everything. Files, database, mailboxes, DNS records and SSL. Nothing changes at your current host.
  4. You check the copy. We send a temporary address where the site runs on Tremhost. Click through it, and we fix anything that differs.
  5. We switch over when you say go. We change DNS at a time you choose. Mail keeps arriving on both servers while the change spreads, so nothing is lost.
  6. Cancel your old host yourself once you’re happy, usually after a week. We never cancel it for you.

Migrations are worked on Monday to Friday, 08:00–17:00 CAT. Switch-overs can be scheduled outside those hours by arrangement. Moves from Plesk, DirectAdmin, custom servers or site builders are possible, but we quote them first.

Moving it yourself

  1. At your old host, download the site files (the folder with wp-config.php) and export the database with phpMyAdmin.
  2. On Tremhost, create a database and user, then import the database.
  3. Upload the files to public_html, and put the new database name, user and password in wp-config.php.
  4. Point the domain to Tremhost, then get the free SSL once it resolves.

A migration plugin such as All-in-One WP Migration or Duplicator can do steps 1 to 3 for you, though free versions often limit the size of the site.

Tip: Don’t cancel the old hosting, or change nameservers, before the copy has been tested. If your email lives at the old host, move it as well, or it stops working when DNS switches.
