How a transfer works

Generic domains move with a transfer code. .co.zw domains move through ZISPA with a release from your current registrar.

How much does it cost to transfer a domain?

A .com or .org transfer is $15.99 and a .net $17. For these the transfer normally adds one year to the expiry date, so you are not paying for nothing. A .co.zw transfer is $6.99. See the transfer prices for other extensions.

Will my website or email go down during the transfer?

No, as long as the nameservers stay the same. A transfer changes who manages the registration, not where the domain points. We check your DNS records before we start.

How long does a .com transfer take?

The old registrar is notified and has five days to approve or refuse. Most transfers finish within about a week. You can approve it sooner at the old registrar if they offer that.

Why can't I transfer a domain I registered recently?

For .com, .net, .org and other generic domains, a registrar may refuse a transfer within 60 days of registration, of a previous transfer, or of a change of owner. Wait until the 60 days have passed.

How do I transfer a .co.zw domain?

.co.zw doesn't use a transfer code. You ask us to take it over; as a ZISPA member we apply to ZISPA, which needs an email from your current registrar releasing the domain to us. If the owner is changing too, ZISPA needs the new owner's documents.

What if my web designer or an old employee controls the domain?

If you are the registered owner, you can ask the current registrar for the transfer code or release. If the domain is registered in someone else's name, the owner has to agree first. Message us and we will help you work out which case you are in.

My domain has expired. Can I still transfer it?

Usually not until it is renewed at the current registrar. Renew it there first, or ask us and we will tell you the quickest way to get it back for your extension.

Do I need hosting with Tremhost to transfer a domain?

No. You can transfer only the domain and keep pointing it at your current website and email.
