If your domain is registered with Tremhost, you can keep its DNS with us while your website or email is hosted elsewhere: send us the records your other provider gives you and we add them. Or point the domain's nameservers to that provider and manage the records there.
Your options
| Option | Good when | Who edits the records |
|---|---|---|
| Keep DNS with Tremhost | You use services from several providers and want the records in one place | We do, on request, or you, if your client area shows DNS management for the domain |
| Use your provider's nameservers | One provider, such as a website builder, runs everything | You, at that provider |
| Use Cloudflare | You also want a firewall and CDN in front of the site | You at Cloudflare, or us with Tremhost Armor |
Keep DNS with Tremhost
- Get the exact records from your website or email provider: the type (A, CNAME, MX or TXT), the name and the value.
- Sign in to the client area, open Domains and click the domain. If you see a DNS management option, add the records there.
- If you don't, open a support ticket with the domain name and the records pasted as text, not a screenshot. Say which existing records should be removed.
- Once they're in, allow a few hours for the change to spread (propagation), then finish the setup at your provider.
Point the nameservers elsewhere
In the client area, open Domains, click the domain, then Nameservers, and enter the provider's nameservers. From then on, every record, including email, is managed at that provider.
Tip: Before you change nameservers, copy your existing records, especially MX and TXT. Any record you don't recreate at the new provider stops working, and email is usually the first thing to break.
- My domain is registered with another company.
- Then its DNS is managed there, or wherever its nameservers point, and we can't edit it from here. Transfer it to Tremhost if you want everything in one place.
- Do I need Tremhost hosting to keep a domain with you?
- No. You can keep just the domain with us and point it at any website or email service.
Not sure which records you need? Send us the provider's instructions in a ticket and we'll check them.
