Verify the domain with the TXT record Google or Microsoft gives you, create your users there, then replace your MX records with theirs and update SPF. If your domain uses Tremhost nameservers, make the changes in cPanel's Zone Editor and set Email Routing to Remote Mail Exchanger.
- Start the setup in the Google Admin console or the Microsoft 365 admin centre and add your domain. Each asks you to prove you own it with a TXT record: How do I add a TXT record?
- Create your users and mailboxes there before changing anything else, so incoming mail has somewhere to land.
- In cPanel, open Domains → Zone Editor and click Manage next to the domain. Delete the existing MX records and add the ones in the table below.
- Edit the SPF record (the TXT record starting
v=spf1) and add your new provider'sinclude:before the final~allor-all. Keep one SPF record only. - In cPanel, open Email → Email Routing, choose the domain and select Remote Mail Exchanger. Without this, mail sent from your website or from other accounts on the same server can be delivered to the old cPanel mailbox instead.
- Turn on DKIM in the provider's admin console and add the records it gives you, then add a DMARC record (guide).
- Send test messages to and from an outside address, such as a personal Gmail.
| Record | Google Workspace | Microsoft 365 |
|---|---|---|
| MX | smtp.google.com, priority 1 | The value shown in the admin centre under Settings → Domains, priority 0 |
| SPF include | include:_spf.google.com | include:spf.protection.outlook.com |
| Also add | DKIM TXT record generated in the Admin console | CNAME autodiscover pointing to autodiscover.outlook.com, plus the DKIM CNAMEs |
If your provider's setup screen shows different values, use theirs.
Tip: Changing MX moves all new mail at once, but old messages stay in your cPanel mailboxes until you copy them across (moving email). Switch early on a weekday, when we're around to help.
- My domain's DNS isn't with Tremhost.
- Make the same changes wherever the nameservers point. If the domain is registered with us but has no hosting, send us the records.
- Can I keep my website on Tremhost?
- Yes. Only the email records change; the website's A record stays as it is.
- Do I need Google or Microsoft for business email?
- Not always. Every Tremhost web hosting plan includes unlimited mailboxes, and business email is $5 a month for up to 50 people. Choose Google or Microsoft if you need their apps.
