How do I point my domain to Wix, Shopify or another platform?

Add the DNS records the platform shows you, usually an A record for the main domain and a CNAME for www, and leave your email records alone so email keeps working. If your domain uses Tremhost nameservers, make the change in cPanel's Zone Editor, or send the records to us in a ticket.

  1. In Wix, Shopify or the other platform, choose to connect a domain you already own, and pick the option that changes DNS records (often called pointing), not the one that changes nameservers.
  2. Copy the records it shows you. They differ between platforms and sometimes between sites.
  3. Check your email records first. On cPanel hosting, the MX record often points at the domain itself, and mail.yourdomain.com often follows the main domain's A record. If yours do, changing that A record also sends your email to the platform. Before switching, replace the mail record with an A record holding your Tremhost server's IP address (it's in your welcome email) and point the MX record at mail.yourdomain.com. If you're unsure, ask us to do this step.
  4. If you have Tremhost hosting for the domain, log in to cPanel, open Domains → Zone Editor and click Manage next to the domain. If you only have the domain with us, send us the records instead.
  5. Edit the existing A record for the main domain (named yourdomain.com.) and replace its address with the platform's. Don't add a second A record beside the old one.
  6. Edit the www record to the CNAME the platform gives. A name can't hold a CNAME and another record at the same time, so remove any old A record for www.
  7. Go back to the platform and click its verify or connect button. It can take a few hours to succeed; the platform then issues its own SSL certificate.

Example: Shopify

TypeNameValue
Ayourdomain.com.23.227.38.65
CNAMEwwwshops.myshopify.com

These are the values Shopify has published for years, but always use what your platform's connect screen shows.

Tip: Make the change early on a weekday, when we're around to help if your email or site misbehaves.

Can I keep my Tremhost email when the website moves?
Yes, once your MX and mail records no longer depend on the main domain's A record (step 3). Keep the hosting plan that holds your mailboxes, or move email to business email.
The platform asks me to change nameservers instead.
You can, but then every record, including email, has to be recreated at the platform. Copy your MX and TXT records first.

Want us to check the records before you switch? open a support ticket with the platform's instructions.
