Sign in to the client area, open Domains, click the domain, choose Nameservers, enter the new nameservers and save. This works for domains registered with Tremhost; for a domain registered elsewhere, change them at that registrar.
- Sign in to the client area and open Domains.
- Click the domain you want to change.
- Open Nameservers. If you are offered a choice between default and custom nameservers, choose custom.
- Type the new nameservers, one per box. Most providers give you two.
- Save, and wait for the confirmation message.
Moving to Tremhost hosting? Copy the nameservers from your welcome email or your hosting plan’s page: see Which nameservers should I use? Pointing the domain at another service, such as Cloudflare or a website builder, use the nameservers that service gives you.
Before you change them
- Nameservers decide who answers for all your DNS records: the website, email (MX) and any verification records. Set up your email records at the new provider first, or mail can stop arriving.
- Enter at least two working nameservers. A .co.zw domain needs two.
- Only moving the website? Leave the nameservers alone and change the A record instead: see How do I edit DNS records?
How long it takes
Usually a few hours, but allow up to 48 hours while networks around the world refresh their records. See How long until my site works?
One wrong character in a nameserver takes the website and email offline. Copy and paste them, and check there is no space or full stop at the end.
- There is no Nameservers option for my domain.
- The domain may be registered with another company, expired, or still being transferred. Check its status under Domains, or ask us.
- Can you change them for me?
- Yes, for domains registered with us. Open a ticket with the domain and the new nameservers.
