Type the name into the domain search on tremhost.com/domains. It opens in the client area and shows, for each extension, whether the name is free and what it costs.
- Go to Domains, or straight to Register a domain in the client area.
- Type the name you want, such as
yourbusiness. You don't need the www. - Run the search. Each extension shows as available or taken, with its price.
- If the one you want is available, add it to the cart and pay. Searching doesn't hold the name, so register it straight away once you're sure.
- A .co.zw needs only the owner's accurate name, address, email address and phone number (what you need). A .org.zw or .ac.zw also needs a signed letter on the organisation's letterhead.
If the name is taken
- Try another extension: .co.zw, .com, .africa, or one for your sector such as .org.zw or .school.
- Add a word that fits your business or town, such as
yourbusinessharareoryourbusinessmotors. - Check whether the name is actually in use. If it shows no website, a WHOIS lookup may show its expiry date, and it may come free if the owner doesn't renew: see expired domains.
Choosing a name that works
- Short, and easy to spell when you say it over the phone.
- No hyphens or numbers that people mishear.
- The name customers already know you by.
Tip: "Available" in the search doesn't guarantee a .co.zw. If the name is a well-known company's or organisation's name, you need that company's authority to register it.
- Should I register more than one extension?
- If the name matters to your brand, register the .co.zw and the .com together and point one at the other, so nobody else can take either (.co.zw or .com?).
- Do I need hosting to register a domain?
- No. You can register just the domain now and add hosting or email later.
