How do I set up my own branded nameservers?

Create ns1 and ns2 on your brand domain as child nameservers (glue records) using the IP addresses we give you, add matching A records, then ask us to make them the default nameservers on your reseller account.

Branded (private) nameservers such as ns1.yourbrand.co.zw mean your clients see your name in their DNS, not ours. Reseller and master reseller plans are white label right down to the nameservers.

On a reseller or master reseller plan

  1. Ask us for the IP addresses. Open a support ticket on your reseller plan and say which brand domain you want to use. We will tell you which IP address each nameserver should use.
  2. Register the child nameservers. At the registrar of your brand domain, find the setting called something like Child nameservers, Register nameservers, Host records or Glue records. Create ns1.yourbrand.co.zw and ns2.yourbrand.co.zw with those IP addresses. If your brand domain is registered with Tremhost, ask us to do this in the same ticket.
  3. Add A records. In the DNS zone of your brand domain, add A records for ns1 and ns2 pointing to the same IP addresses. If the domain is hosted on your reseller account, use Domains → Zone Editor in its cPanel.
  4. Make them your defaults. Ask us to set ns1 and ns2 as the nameservers for your reseller account, so new accounts you create use them.
  5. Check them. Run nslookup ns1.yourbrand.co.zw (or dig ns1.yourbrand.co.zw +short). It should return the IP address. New glue records can take up to 48 hours to reach every network.
  6. Move clients across. Give new clients your nameservers. For existing clients, change the nameservers on each domain to yours (see How do I change my domain's nameservers?) and check that the site still loads afterwards.

On a managed cPanel VPS or dedicated server

You have WHM with full access, so you set them yourself. In WHM, open Server Configuration → Basic WebHost Manager Setup, enter your nameservers, and use Configure Address Records to create their A records. Then register the child nameservers at your registrar with your server's IP addresses, as in step 2. Some registries will not accept two nameservers on the same IP address. If yours refuses, ask us about an extra IP address.

Tip: Use a brand domain you will keep for years, and never let it expire. If it lapses, every client site that uses your nameservers stops resolving.
