Your browser couldn’t find or connect to the server. Usually the domain has expired, its nameservers or DNS records are wrong or still updating, or a firewall has blocked your own network; the error code under the message tells you which.
What the error code means
| Code under the message | What it usually means |
|---|---|
DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN or ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED (the server’s IP address could not be found) | The domain isn’t pointing anywhere: it has expired, the nameservers are wrong, it was recently changed, or the address is mistyped |
ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT | The server didn’t answer. Often your own IP address has been blocked by the firewall |
ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED | The server turned the connection away: a blocked IP, or a fault on the server |
Work through these
- Check the address. Look for typos, and try it with and without
www. - Try another network. Turn off Wi-Fi on your phone and open the site on mobile data. If it works there, the problem is your office network: its IP may be blocked by our firewall, often after repeated wrong passwords.
- Check the domain hasn’t expired. If it is registered with us, sign in to the client area and open Domains. An expired domain takes the website and email offline: see What happens when my domain expires?
- Check the nameservers. Look the domain up on a public DNS checker such as whatsmydns.net. The nameservers should be the ones in your welcome email (see Which nameservers should I use?). Changed them recently? Allow up to 48 hours: see How long until my site works?
- If your DNS is elsewhere, check the domain’s A record points to the server IP address in your welcome email.
- Clear your own cache. Restart the browser, or the phone. On Windows, run
ipconfig /flushdns.
Tip: If you see an error number such as 403, 500 or 503, or a page saying the account is suspended, the server is reachable. That is a different problem: see 500 errors or 403 errors.
If nobody can reach the site from any network and the domain and DNS look right, open a ticket marked urgent. A site that is down for everyone is our highest priority, acknowledged within one hour under our SLA.
Still stuck? Open a support ticket with your domain and the exact error code, or message us on WhatsApp.
