How do I reset my WordPress admin password?

Go to yourdomain.com/wp-login.php, click Lost your password? and follow the link WordPress emails you. If that email never arrives, sign in through WordPress Manager by Softaculous in cPanel and set a new password, or change it in phpMyAdmin.

By email (try this first)

  1. Open https://yourdomain.com/wp-login.php and click Lost your password?
  2. Enter your WordPress username or the email address on your admin account and click Get New Password.
  3. Open the email, follow the link and choose a new password. Check spam if it hasn’t arrived within a few minutes.

No email at all usually means the site can’t send mail, or the admin address is one you no longer use. See Why don’t my WordPress contact forms send email? and use one of the methods below for now.

From cPanel, with WordPress Manager

  1. Log in to cPanel from the client area and open Software → WordPress Manager by Softaculous.
  2. Find your site and use its Login button. It signs you straight in to wp-admin without a password.
  3. In wp-admin, open Users → Profile, click Set New Password and save with Update Profile.

If your site isn’t listed, it wasn’t installed with Softaculous. Use phpMyAdmin instead.

From phpMyAdmin

  1. In File Manager, open wp-config.php in your site’s folder and note the database name after DB_NAME and the table prefix after $table_prefix (often wp_).
  2. Open Databases → phpMyAdmin, click that database, then the wp_users table (with your prefix).
  3. Click Edit on your user’s row. In the user_pass row, choose MD5 in the Function column and type the new password in the Value box.
  4. Click Go, then log in with the new password. WordPress replaces the MD5 with a stronger hash the first time you log in.

Tip: Once you’re in, open Users and check every administrator. If there’s one you don’t recognise, or your password stopped working without you changing it, treat the site as hacked: see My WordPress site has been hacked.

On managed WordPress? Open a support ticket and we’ll reset it with you. Never send the new password in the ticket.
