How do I make my website load faster for visitors in Zimbabwe?

Make each page lighter, turn on caching and put Cloudflare in front of the site. Smaller images do the most good, because many Zimbabwean visitors are on mobile data. A server in Johannesburg, our closest data centre, also helps if your visitors are mostly local.

Test before you change anything. Run your home page through PageSpeed Insights and open it on a phone over mobile data. Repeat after each change so you know what helped.

  1. Shrink your images. This is usually the biggest win. Resize photos to the width they are shown at (rarely more than 1,600 pixels), compress them and use WebP where you can. A 4 MB phone photo used as a banner costs every mobile visitor data and seconds.
  2. Turn on caching. Our web hosting runs the LiteSpeed web server. On WordPress, install the LiteSpeed Cache plugin: see How do I speed up WordPress with LiteSpeed Cache?
  3. Use a current PHP version. Newer versions run faster. See How do I change my PHP version?
  4. Cut what you don’t need. Every slider, chat widget, extra font, tracking script and embedded video adds weight. Delete plugins you no longer use instead of just deactivating them. For a video, link to YouTube from a thumbnail image instead of embedding the player on the home page.
  5. Put Cloudflare in front. Cloudflare serves images, scripts and styles from the Cloudflare city nearest each visitor and blocks junk traffic. Armor Guard sets it up for you for $9 a month; managed WordPress includes Cloudflare Pro for every site.
  6. Choose the right location. Johannesburg is our closest data centre to Zimbabwe. Our web hosting runs on shared servers in Europe and the USA, so if almost all your visitors are local and the site is busy, a VPS in Johannesburg can help. See Which data centre is fastest for visitors in Zimbabwe?

Tip: Don’t chase a perfect score. A page that loads in a couple of seconds on a phone and uses little data matters more than the last few points.

Will a bigger hosting plan make my site faster?
Usually not. Our web hosting plans all run on the same LiteSpeed, CloudLinux and NVMe platform and differ in storage, bandwidth and databases, so a heavy page stays heavy. Fix the page first.
Is there a Tremhost data centre in Zimbabwe?
No. Our servers are in Johannesburg, New York, Miami, Limburg and Roubaix. See Data centres.
