How do I speed up WordPress with LiteSpeed Cache?

Install and activate the free LiteSpeed Cache plugin from Plugins → Add New Plugin. Page caching starts working straight away on our web hosting, because our servers run the LiteSpeed web server. Then switch on the optional settings one at a time, testing the site after each.

  1. In wp-admin, open Plugins → Add New Plugin, search for LiteSpeed Cache (by LiteSpeed Technologies), click Install Now, then Activate.
  2. Open LiteSpeed Cache → Cache and check Enable Cache is on. That’s the main speed gain, and it’s on by default.
  3. Remove any other page-caching plugin, such as WP Super Cache, W3 Total Cache or WP Rocket. Two page caches on one site cause stale or broken pages.
  4. Open LiteSpeed Cache → Page Optimization. Under Media Settings, switch on Lazy Load Images and save. Images further down the page now load only when the visitor scrolls to them, which saves mobile data.
  5. Still on Page Optimization, try the CSS and JS settings (minify first, then combine or defer) one at a time. After each, check the home page and a form in a private window. If the layout breaks or a menu stops working, switch that setting off again.
  6. After design changes, clear the cache from the LiteSpeed Cache menu in the admin bar with Purge All.

Good to know

  • Shops: with WooCommerce, LiteSpeed Cache leaves the cart, checkout and My Account pages uncached, so customers see their own baskets.
  • Image optimisation in the plugin uses QUIC.cloud, LiteSpeed’s online service, which you connect separately and which has its own usage limits. Compressing images before you upload them works just as well and costs nothing.
  • Logged-in pages aren’t cached by default. To see the speed your visitors get, test while logged out.
  • Which servers: our web hosting, reseller hosting and managed cPanel VPS run LiteSpeed. On an unmanaged VPS the plugin’s page cache works only if you install a LiteSpeed web server yourself.

Tip: Note each setting before you change it. If the site breaks and you aren’t sure which change did it, the plugin’s Toolbox page can reset all settings to their defaults.

On managed WordPress, caching and CDN are set up for you. For more ways to speed up your site, see How do I make my website load faster for visitors in Zimbabwe?
