How do I block spam or a particular sender?

Turn on Spam Filters in cPanel to catch most junk automatically. To stop one sender, add their address or domain to the spam block list, or create an email filter that discards their messages.

Catch spam automatically

  1. Log in to cPanel and open Email → Spam Filters.
  2. Switch on Process New Emails and Mark them as Spam.
  3. Switch on Move New Spam to a Separate Folder (Spam Box), so junk goes to a Spam folder instead of your inbox.
  4. Leave Automatically Delete New Spam off until you have checked the Spam folder for a week or two and are sure no real mail is caught.

Block one sender or domain

Option 1, the spam block list. On the Spam Filters page, open the additional (advanced) settings and edit the spam block list (older cPanel versions call it the blacklist). Add the address, such as [email protected], or a whole domain as *@example.com, and save. Their mail is treated as spam.

Option 2, an email filter. This deletes the sender’s mail before you see it:

  1. Open Email → Email Filters and click Manage next to the mailbox. To apply a filter to every mailbox, use Email → Global Email Filters.
  2. Click Create a New Filter and give it a name.
  3. Set the rule to From “contains” the address or domain.
  4. Set the action to Discard Message and click Create.

Spam that seems to come from your own address is usually forged. Don’t block your own domain, or your colleagues’ mail goes too. Set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC instead, which makes forging your domain much harder.

When it’s a scam, not spam

A message asking you to pay a supplier’s “new” bank account is fraud, not junk, and spam filters are built to let well-written single messages through. Confirm any change of bank details by phoning the supplier on a number you already have. See How do I spot a fake invoice? To catch these automatically, Armor Mail holds lookalike senders and changed bank details for review, from $12 a month for ten mailboxes.
