To choose a web hosting company, compare what you will pay at renewal, what is included, where the servers are, how backups and security work, how you can pay, and how quickly a real person helps when something breaks. Marketing claims such as “best” or “fastest” tell you nothing; published prices, written terms and stated support hours do. This guide lists the ten checks that matter and shows how Tremhost answers each one, so you can hold any host to the same standard.
Start with what your website needs
Before comparing hosts, write down what your website has to do. A brochure site for a small business, a WordPress blog, an online shop and a company running fifty mailboxes have different needs. Note:
- How many websites and mailboxes you need, now and in a year.
- Roughly how many visitors you expect, and where they are.
- Whether the site runs WordPress, an online shop or custom software.
- Who will look after updates, backups and security: you, a developer or the host.
If you are new to this, read what web hosting is first. For most small business websites and blogs, shared hosting is enough. Applications that need root access or custom server software need a VPS.
Ten things to check before you buy hosting
1. The renewal price, not just the first-year price
Many hosts advertise a low introductory price for the first term, sometimes only on a three-year plan, and charge much more when the plan renews. Look for the renewal price on the pricing page or in the terms, and work out the cost over three years, not one. Tremhost does not use introductory pricing: plans renew at the price you signed up at.
2. What the plan includes
Check storage, bandwidth, number of websites, databases and mailboxes, and whether SSL and backups cost extra. A cheap plan that charges separately for backups, email or SSL can cost more than a dearer one that includes them. Tremhost’s cPanel web hosting plans all include free SSL, unlimited mailboxes, daily backups, LiteSpeed web servers and NVMe storage. They start with Himalaya at $30 a year (20 GB NVMe, 3 databases), then Bvumba at $5 a month, Chimanimani at $8, Nyangani at $10 and The Big Mike at $25 a month for 500 GB of NVMe storage.
3. The control panel
A familiar control panel makes everyday tasks such as creating mailboxes, installing WordPress or restoring a backup easy, and makes moving hosts later straightforward because many hosts can import a standard cPanel backup. Tremhost uses cPanel, with a one-click installer for more than 400 apps including WordPress.
4. Server technology
Ask which web server and storage type the plan uses. LiteSpeed web servers with server-side caching and NVMe solid-state storage help dynamic sites such as WordPress respond quickly. Also ask about resource limits such as CPU, memory and processes per account, because these decide how much traffic a site can handle more than storage does. LiteSpeed and NVMe are standard on Tremhost web hosting.
5. Server location
Distance adds delay, so servers near your visitors help. Ask where the plan’s servers actually are. Tremhost’s shared hosting runs in Europe and the USA; its VPS servers can be placed in Johannesburg, New York, Miami, Limburg or Roubaix. A content delivery network such as Cloudflare, which has a data centre in Harare, serves cached content closer to visitors in Zimbabwe.
6. Backups
Find out how often backups run, how long they are kept, whether they are stored off the server, and whether you can restore them yourself. Tremhost web hosting includes daily backups that you can restore from cPanel; the Help Centre explains how to restore from a backup. Keep your own copy as well.
7. Security
Check for free SSL, malware scanning, a firewall and account isolation, and ask what happens if your site is hacked. Tremhost includes free SSL on all hosting and offers Armor SOS, free same-day triage for hacked sites.
8. Uptime commitment in writing
An uptime figure only means something if it is in a written service level agreement that says how availability is measured, what is excluded and what remedy you get if the target is missed. Tremhost publishes a service level agreement with a 99.9% monthly availability target for hosting, email and servers.
9. Support you can reach
Ask which channels exist, the hours, and whether you reach a person who can act. A support desk several time zones away can mean waiting until the next day. Tremhost’s Harare team answers tickets, WhatsApp on +263 73 563 9917 and booked calls, Monday to Friday 08:00 to 17:00 CAT. Hacked sites get Armor SOS triage the same working day.
10. Payment, refunds and leaving
Can you pay in a way that works for you, every year, without your card being declined? Is there a refund window? Can you take your site and domain elsewhere? Tremhost bills in US dollars and accepts EcoCash, InnBucks, ZimSwitch, Omari, Visa, Mastercard, Bitcoin, Tron and Litecoin. There is a 30-day refund on the first order for web hosting, managed WordPress, business email and reseller hosting, and your domain stays registered in your name.
A comparison sheet you can use
Copy this table and fill in a column for each host you are considering. Use the provider’s own pricing page and terms, not review sites.
| Check | What to write down | Tremhost (web hosting) |
|---|---|---|
| Renewal price | Price after the first term | Same as sign-up price |
| SSL and backups | Included or extra | Free SSL, daily backups included |
| Mailboxes | Number included | Unlimited |
| Server location | Country or city | Europe and USA (shared); five VPS locations |
| Uptime terms | Written SLA with remedy? | 99.9% monthly availability target |
| Support hours | Channels and hours | Mon to Fri, 08:00 to 17:00 CAT; ticket, WhatsApp, call |
| Payment | Local options | EcoCash, InnBucks, ZimSwitch, Omari, cards, crypto |
| Refund | Window and conditions | 30 days on first order (eligible services) |
| Migration | Free or paid | Free for cPanel sites |
Switching hosts without downtime
If you already have a website, ask whether migration is included and whether your site stays live during the move. A good migration copies files, databases and mailboxes first, tests the site on the new server, and only then switches the DNS. Tremhost offers free website migration for cPanel sites, typically within 24 hours, and your site stays on the old host until the switch.
Red flags when choosing a hosting company
- Prices shown only for three-year terms, with renewals hidden.
- “Unlimited” everything with no fair-use terms you can read.
- Uptime claims with no written SLA.
- No physical address, or support only by email with no stated hours.
- Your domain registered in the host’s or a designer’s name instead of yours.
- Reviews you cannot trace to a real platform.
