To market your business with a website, treat the site as the place every other channel sends people: it should load quickly on a phone, explain what you sell and to whom, show proof that you are real, and make it easy to call, message or buy. Then bring visitors to it through search, Google Business Profile, social media, email and WhatsApp, and measure which channels produce enquiries. This guide walks through each step for a small business.
Start with a clear message
Before spending on advertising, make sure a stranger understands your business within a few seconds of landing on the homepage. Answer three questions near the top of the page:
- What do you do? Use plain words a customer would use, not internal jargon.
- Who is it for? Name your customers and where you serve them, for example “plumbing for homes and offices in Harare”.
- What should the visitor do next? One clear button: call, WhatsApp, request a quote or buy.
Then explain what makes you different. That might be a guarantee, a specialism, faster turnaround, local stock or the payment methods you accept. Be specific; “quality service” does not distinguish anyone.
Build a site that works on a phone
Many visitors will arrive on a mobile phone, often on mobile data. A responsive design adjusts the layout to the screen, so text stays readable and buttons are easy to tap. Keep pages light: compress images, avoid autoplaying video, and do not load scripts you do not need. Put your phone number and a WhatsApp link where a thumb can reach them.
Speed depends on the site and the hosting. A page builder overloaded with plugins will be slow anywhere, while a lean site on hosting with NVMe storage and server caching responds quickly.
Use your own domain and email
A domain such as yourbusiness.co.zw and email addresses on that domain look more trustworthy than a free webmail address, and they belong to you rather than to a platform. Register the domain in the business’s name and keep the login yourself. If you are new to this, read what is a domain name. Set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC records so your emails reach inboxes rather than spam folders.
Show proof that you are real
Visitors decide quickly whether to trust you. Help them with:
- A physical address and a map, if you have premises.
- Real photos of your team, work or products, rather than stock images only.
- Reviews from genuine customers, with permission, and a link to your Google reviews.
- Registration details, professional memberships or certifications you actually hold.
- Clear prices, or at least a starting price, where possible.
Never invent testimonials or numbers. Customers and search engines both notice.
Get found in search
Search engine optimisation (SEO) helps people who are already looking for what you sell. For a small business the essentials are:
- One page per service, each with a clear title that uses the words customers search for, such as “roof repairs in Bulawayo”.
- Useful content that answers common questions: prices, process, timelines, what to prepare.
- A Google Business Profile with accurate hours, phone number, photos and a link to your site. This is often what appears in local results and on Maps.
- Consistent contact details across your website, profile and directories.
- Secure HTTPS, which browsers expect and which protects form submissions.
Bring visitors from other channels
Social media
Use social platforms to show work, answer questions and share offers, but link back to your website for details and enquiries. Your site is the one channel whose rules you control.
Email marketing
Offer something useful in exchange for an email address, such as a price list, a guide or early access to offers, and send occasional, relevant updates. Get consent and make unsubscribing easy.
For many customers in Zimbabwe, WhatsApp is the most natural way to ask a question. Add a click-to-chat link on every page and answer promptly during your stated hours.
Paid advertising
Search and social ads can bring visitors quickly, but only spend once the landing page converts. Send each ad to the most relevant page, not the homepage.
Measure what works
Install analytics and set up conversions for the actions that matter: form submissions, calls, WhatsApp clicks and purchases. Ask new customers how they found you. Review monthly and move effort toward the channels that produce enquiries rather than just visits.
Keep the site healthy
A hacked or offline site damages trust quickly. Keep software and plugins updated, use strong passwords with two-factor authentication, and make sure backups run daily and can be restored. Update content whenever prices, hours or services change.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a website if I already use social media?
Social media is useful, but you do not control its reach or rules. A website gives you a permanent address, search visibility and a place to send customers from every channel.
How many pages does a small business website need?
Often five is enough to start: home, services, about, contact and one page answering common questions. Add a page for each major service as you grow.
How long does SEO take?
It varies with competition and content. Local searches for a specific service in a specific town are usually easier to appear for than broad national terms.
Can I update the website myself?
On most platforms, yes. On Tremhost’s Basic design package, one edit each quarter is also included.

If you need the site itself built, see the Tremhost website design packages and request a first draft.
