Cloudflare Pro adds managed web application firewall rules, stronger bot protection, image optimisation and faster WordPress delivery on top of what Cloudflare’s free plan already gives you. The free plan includes the content delivery network, DDoS protection and a free SSL certificate. So the real question is whether your site needs Pro’s extra security and performance tools. This guide explains each feature, what it does for a business site and what Pro does not do.
How Cloudflare works
When your domain uses Cloudflare, visitors connect to Cloudflare’s network first. Cloudflare checks and speeds up the traffic, then forwards it to your web server, called the origin. Every Cloudflare feature works at this point between the visitor and your server. Cloudflare has data centres in many cities, including Harare.
What the free plan already includes
Before looking at Pro, it helps to know what you get without paying:
- Global CDN. Static files such as images, CSS and JavaScript are cached on Cloudflare’s network and served from near the visitor.
- DDoS protection. Cloudflare absorbs floods of attack traffic at its network edge, without a traffic cap.
- Universal SSL. A free certificate so visitors connect over HTTPS.
- DNS hosting. Cloudflare’s DNS service for your domain.
- Basic firewall and bot tools. A small number of custom rules and a simple bot protection mode.
For a small brochure site, the free plan can be a reasonable start. The gap shows up when a site handles logins, forms, payments or is attacked often.
Cloudflare Pro features explained
Managed WAF rules
A web application firewall (WAF) inspects each request to your site and blocks ones that match known attack patterns, such as SQL injection and cross-site scripting. Pro includes Cloudflare’s managed rulesets, which Cloudflare’s own team maintains and updates as new attacks appear, including rules based on the OWASP core rule set. You do not have to write these rules yourself.
Why it matters: many small business sites run WordPress plugins or other software that is not always up to date. Managed rules can block common attacks on known weaknesses before they reach the site.
More custom firewall rules
Pro allows more custom rules than the free plan. Custom rules let you, or whoever manages Cloudflare for you, block or challenge traffic by country, IP address, URL path or other conditions. A common use is adding extra checks on the WordPress login page or blocking traffic to admin areas from unexpected locations.
Super Bot Fight Mode
Bots make up a large share of traffic to most websites. Some are useful, such as search engine crawlers. Others guess passwords, scrape content or submit spam. Pro’s Super Bot Fight Mode gives you more control than the free bot mode, so you can challenge or block likely automated traffic while allowing verified good bots through.
Image optimisation with Polish
Polish compresses images automatically as Cloudflare serves them and can convert them to WebP for browsers that support it. Smaller images mean faster pages, especially for visitors on mobile data.
Automatic Platform Optimization for WordPress
Automatic Platform Optimization (APO) lets Cloudflare cache whole WordPress pages, not just images and files, and serve them from its network. This can make pages load faster for visitors far from your server and reduce load on your hosting. It is included with Pro.
Better analytics
Pro gives more detail on traffic, cache performance and security events. That helps you see what is being blocked and whether caching is working.
Support
Pro customers can contact Cloudflare support by email. Free plan users rely mainly on documentation and the community.

What Cloudflare Pro does not do
- It does not fix your website’s code. Out-of-date plugins and themes still need updating.
- It does not remove malware that is already on your server.
- It does not stop stolen passwords being used by someone who logs in normally. Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication.
- It does not configure itself. Rules, SSL mode and caching need setting up for your site. Wrong settings can break email, block customers or cache pages that should not be cached.
- It does not replace backups. Keep regular backups stored away from your server.
Is Cloudflare Pro worth it?
Pro is usually worth considering if your site:
- Runs WordPress or another CMS with plugins.
- Has login pages, contact forms or a checkout.
- Has been attacked or hacked before.
- Has a lot of images and visitors on mobile data.
- Brings in enquiries or sales that you would lose if it went down.
Cloudflare lists Pro at $25 a month on monthly billing, or $20 a month billed annually. Through Tremhost, Armor Guard provides Cloudflare Pro-grade protection for one site at $9 a month or $90 a year, with the firewall rules, DDoS protection and SSL set up and monitored by Tremhost. Frequently asked questions
Does Cloudflare Pro make my website faster?
It can. Image optimisation, APO for WordPress and caching reduce the amount of data sent and the distance it travels. The gain depends on your site and how it is configured.
Can I upgrade from the free plan to Pro later?
Yes. Your domain stays on Cloudflare and the Pro features are added to it.
Is Cloudflare Pro enough for an online store?
For many small stores, yes. Stores that handle high volumes or need tighter guarantees may need business-level protection. Tremhost’s Cloudflare page compares the options.
