Best Web Hosting for Forums: How to Choose in 2026

Forum hosting depends first on the software you choose: PHP forums run on ordinary hosting, while Discourse needs a server or a hosted plan. This guide covers what to check, a short list of options with published terms and a decision guide.

The best web hosting for forums depends first on the forum software. Traditional PHP forums such as phpBB, or bbPress on WordPress, run on ordinary cPanel web hosting while the community is small. Discourse needs either its own server running Docker or a hosted Discourse plan. As a community grows, database load, notification email and spam become the limits, so plan for a move to a VPS before the forum slows down.

This is Tremhost’s own blog, and Tremhost is one of the providers listed.

Choose the forum software first

The software decides what kind of hosting you need:

Software What it is Typical hosting
phpBB Long-established, free, open-source forum software written in PHP Ordinary cPanel web hosting with MySQL or MariaDB
bbPress A free forum plugin for WordPress Any WordPress hosting; suits a site that already runs WordPress
Discourse Open-source discussion platform, installed with Docker A VPS or cloud server with root access, or hosted Discourse

If you are not sure, think about who will maintain it. PHP forums can be installed and updated from a control panel. Discourse gives a modern experience on phones but expects someone comfortable with a Linux server, or a monthly hosted plan.

What makes hosting good for a forum or community site

Compatibility with your forum software

What to check: the software’s requirements, such as PHP and MySQL versions for PHP forums, or root access and Docker for Discourse. Why: a forum that cannot be installed or upgraded cleanly becomes a security risk. Discourse’s own cloud install guide lists a minimum of 1 GB RAM with swap, with 2 GB or more recommended, one CPU core (two or more recommended) and 10 GB of disk (20 GB recommended), installed with Docker on 64-bit Linux, as listed on 5 November 2026 in the Discourse install guide.

Database performance

What to check: storage type, CPU and memory limits, and whether caching is available. Why: forums are database-heavy. Every thread view, search and notification queries the database, so NVMe storage and enough RAM matter more than raw disk space.

Email sending

What to check: hourly sending limits and whether you can authenticate mail with SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Why: registrations, password resets and reply notifications all depend on email. A busy forum can exceed the limits on shared hosting, at which point a dedicated email-sending service is the usual answer.

Spam and bot protection

What to check: whether you can put the site behind a web application firewall and add challenges to registration. Why: open registration attracts spam bots and credential-stuffing attempts within days of launch.

Backups

What to check: daily backups that include the database, and a simple restore. Why: years of community posts cannot be recreated if lost. On a VPS, backups are usually your job, so schedule database dumps and copy them to storage off the server; Discourse also has its own built-in backup feature you can enable.

Room to grow

What to check: whether you can move to a larger plan or a VPS without changing provider. Why: forums often grow in bursts, and a slow forum loses members quickly.

Server location

What to check: where the data centres are. Why: members load many pages per visit, so latency adds up. Choose a location close to most of your members.

A shortlist of options

Listed alphabetically. Figures are from each provider’s own page on the date shown; check current terms before you buy.

DigitalOcean

A cloud server provider suited to self-hosting Discourse or any forum software. Its cheapest Basic Droplet is $4.00 a month for 1 vCPU, 512 MiB RAM and 10 GiB SSD, as listed on 5 November 2026 on DigitalOcean’s Droplet pricing page; that is below Discourse’s 1 GB minimum, so a forum needs a larger Droplet from the same page.

Discourse (hosted)

The company behind the open-source Discourse software also hosts it. Its pricing page lists a free plan (2 staff seats, 500k monthly page views, 5 GB storage), Pro at $100 a month and Business at $500 a month, and says the software is free to run on your own servers, as listed on 5 November 2026 on Discourse’s pricing page. Suits communities that want no server work.

Tremhost

Two routes. For PHP forums, cPanel web hosting on LiteSpeed and NVMe, with free SSL and daily backups, from $30 a year for Himalaya (20 GB NVMe, 3 databases) or $5 a month for Bvumba (50 GB, 5 databases). For Discourse or a busier community, an unmanaged KVM VPS with dedicated cores and full root: KVM 1 is $15 a month (2 cores, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe), which meets Discourse’s recommended RAM, and KVM 2 is $18 (4 cores, 4 GB RAM, 60 GB). VPS locations are Johannesburg, New York, Miami, Limburg and Roubaix, listed on the data centres page. Billing is in US dollars, including EcoCash, ZimSwitch and card, and support runs Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00 CAT.

Which option fits your community?

  • A new forum or club with a few hundred members: PHP forum software, or bbPress on WordPress, on ordinary web hosting is enough.
  • You want Discourse and no server work: a hosted Discourse plan.
  • You want Discourse and are comfortable on the command line: a VPS with at least 2 GB RAM, plus an email-sending service.
  • The forum is slowing down on shared hosting: enable caching first, then move to a VPS with more RAM.
  • Members are mostly in Southern Africa: a Johannesburg server keeps page loads quick.
  • Spam registrations are out of control: add a firewall and registration challenge. Tremhost’s Armor Guard puts one site behind Cloudflare Pro, configured and monitored for you, for $9 a month.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run a forum on shared hosting?

Yes, for PHP forum software and a modest community. Watch database performance and email limits as it grows, and move to a VPS when pages slow down at busy times.

Does Discourse run on shared hosting?

No. Discourse is installed with Docker, which needs root access to a Linux server. Use a VPS or a hosted Discourse plan.

How much RAM does a forum need?

It depends on the software and traffic. Discourse lists 1 GB with swap as the minimum and 2 GB or more as recommended; PHP forums on shared hosting use much less until traffic grows.

How do I stop spam sign-ups?

Require email confirmation, add a challenge to the registration form, hold first posts for moderation and put the site behind a web application firewall.

If your forum needs root access or more memory, compare the nine plans on the Tremhost KVM VPS page. Servers are built automatically after payment.
