Best Web Hosting Control Panels: cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin

cPanel, Plesk and DirectAdmin all manage websites, email, databases and DNS, but they differ in licensing, account limits and the servers they run on. This guide explains what to compare and which suits which situation.

The best web hosting control panel depends on the server you run, how many accounts you host and how you want to pay for licences. cPanel and WHM is the most familiar panel for shared and reseller hosting customers, Plesk runs on both Linux and Windows Server, and DirectAdmin offers lower-cost licences with fewer bundled extras. All three manage websites, email, databases, DNS and SSL; the right choice comes down to licensing cost at your account count, operating system, the tools your team already knows and what your clients expect.

This is Tremhost’s own blog, and Tremhost is one of the providers listed.

What makes a control panel good for your server?

Licensing model and cost at your scale

What to check: whether the licence is priced per server, per account or per domain, and what it costs at the number of accounts you expect in two years. Why: a panel that is cheap for five sites can become your largest cost at a hundred.

Operating system support

What to check: which Linux distributions are supported, and whether Windows Server is supported if you need ASP.NET or MSSQL. Why: the panel decides which OS you can run, and changing panel later usually means migrating every site.

Familiarity for clients and staff

What to check: whether your clients, staff or developers already know the panel. Why: a familiar interface means fewer support tickets and faster onboarding, which matters most if you resell hosting.

Multi-account and reseller features

What to check: separate admin and user interfaces, reseller accounts, packages and resource limits. Why: agencies and hosts need to give each client their own login without exposing the server.

Email, DNS and SSL handling

What to check: built-in mail server with spam filtering, DKIM and SPF tools, DNS zone editing and automatic free SSL. Why: these are the daily tasks; if they are awkward, every client feels it.

Ecosystem and add-ons

What to check: integrations such as Softaculous, JetBackup, Imunify360, CloudLinux, LiteSpeed and WHMCS billing modules. Why: the right add-ons cover backups, security and billing without custom work.

Resource use

What to check: the panel’s own memory and disk footprint and minimum requirements. Why: on a small VPS, a heavy panel leaves less room for your sites.

cPanel vs Plesk vs DirectAdmin: the shortlist

Listed alphabetically, not ranked. Licence prices below are vendor list prices; check the vendor’s page before you buy.

  • cPanel and WHM. Licences are tiered by account count: Solo (1 account) $29.99 a month, Admin (up to 5) $35.99, Pro (up to 30) $53.99 and Premier (up to 100) $69.99, with each account above 100 at $0.49 a month; Solo, Admin and Pro are cloud (VPS) licences and Premier is the only tier for dedicated (metal) servers, as listed on 5 November 2026 (pricing effective 16 December 2025). WHM is the server and reseller interface; cPanel is what each account holder sees.
  • DirectAdmin. Licences are Personal PLUS at $5 a month (2 accounts, 20 domains), Lite at $15 (10 accounts, 50 domains) and Standard at $29 (unlimited accounts and domains), as listed on 5 November 2026. Suits cost-conscious server owners who want a simpler panel.
  • Plesk. Editions are Web Admin (10 domains), Web Pro (30 domains) and Web Host (unlimited domains), as listed on 5 November 2026; check that page for current prices in your currency. Plesk Obsidian runs on Linux distributions including Ubuntu, Debian and AlmaLinux and on Windows Server 2016 to 2025, as listed on 5 November 2026. Suits teams that need Windows hosting or manage mixed servers.
  • Tremhost. Not a panel maker, but a supplier of panel licences and hosting. Tremhost supplies cPanel and WHM licences with unlimited accounts for $5 a month on a VPS and $6 on a dedicated server (lifetime $190 for a VPS or $250 for a dedicated server), and Plesk licences from $5 a month on a VPS. These are shared licences supplied by Tremhost that receive official vendor updates; they are not issued directly by the vendor to the buyer. Tremhost does not list DirectAdmin licences.

What licences cost as you grow: a worked example

Using the vendor list prices above, a server with 30 accounts needs cPanel Pro at $53.99 a month. At 150 accounts it needs Premier: $69.99 plus 50 extra accounts at $0.49, or $94.49 a month. DirectAdmin Standard stays at $29 a month at either size because it has no account cap. Plesk pricing depends on the edition and your currency, so price the Web Host edition if you expect more than 30 domains. Remember that the panel is only part of the cost: add the server, backups, security tools such as Imunify360 and any billing software, then compare the total per hosted account.

Which control panel fits your situation?

  • You resell hosting to clients who already know cPanel: cPanel and WHM, or a reseller plan that includes it so you do not buy a licence at all.
  • You need ASP.NET, MSSQL or other Windows software: Plesk on Windows Server.
  • You run a few sites on a small VPS and want to keep costs down: DirectAdmin, or a lower cPanel or Plesk tier sized to your accounts.
  • You do not want to administer a server at all: skip the licence and choose hosting where the panel is included and managed.

Hosting customers do not need to buy a panel licence: every Tremhost web hosting plan includes cPanel, and the managed cPanel VPS from $80 a month includes cPanel and WHM installed and run by Tremhost technicians. Agencies can get WHM with unlimited cPanel accounts on reseller hosting from $7 a month.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch from one control panel to another?

Yes, but it is a migration. Each panel stores accounts differently, so plan time for moving sites, databases, email and DNS, and test before switching.

Do I need a control panel on a VPS?

No. Developers often manage servers from the command line. A panel helps when you host many sites or email accounts, or when non-technical staff need access.

Is a cheaper licence from a hosting provider the same as buying direct?

The software is the same, but the licensing arrangement differs. Ask whether the licence receives official updates and who you contact for support.
