The best Magento hosting is an environment that runs the exact software stack your Magento version requires, has enough dedicated CPU and memory for your catalogue and traffic, includes full-page caching and a search engine, and comes with someone who can keep it patched and recover it quickly. Most ordinary shared hosting is not built for that. For a heavy store, the realistic choices are a managed Magento host, a managed cloud platform, or a VPS run by your own team or a managed service.
This is Tremhost’s own blog, and Tremhost is one of the providers listed.
What makes hosting good for Magento?
The right software stack
What to check: that the host supports every component your Magento version needs. For Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce 2.4.8, Adobe lists PHP 8.3 or 8.4, MariaDB or MySQL, OpenSearch, Valkey for caching and sessions, Varnish, nginx and RabbitMQ, as listed on 5 November 2026. Why: running an unsupported version of any component can break upgrades and security patches.
Dedicated CPU and enough memory
What to check: whether CPU cores are dedicated or shared, how much RAM you get, and whether the database, search engine and cache run on the same server. Why: Magento’s indexers, search and checkout are memory- and CPU-hungry. Running everything on one small server is the most common cause of slow Magento stores.
Full-page cache and object cache
What to check: Varnish (or an equivalent full-page cache) in front of the store and Valkey or Redis for cache and sessions. Why: cached category and product pages are served without running PHP, which keeps the store fast during promotions.
Staging, deployment and cron
What to check: a staging copy, SSH and Composer access, reliable cron jobs and a deployment process. Why: Magento updates and extensions should be tested away from the live store, and many tasks, from indexing to emails, depend on cron running every minute.
Security and patching
What to check: who applies Magento security patches, whether there is a web application firewall and malware scanning, and how admin access is protected. Why: e-commerce sites are targeted for card-skimming scripts, and unpatched Magento stores are a known target.
Backups and recovery
What to check: daily database and file backups stored off the server, and a tested restore time. Why: a failed upgrade on a busy day costs orders every hour the store is down.
Location and payment fit
What to check: server location relative to your customers, and whether your payment gateway, such as Paynow in Zimbabwe, has a maintained Magento integration. Why: latency affects every page view, and a store that cannot take local payments will not convert.
A shortlist of Magento hosting options to compare
Listed alphabetically, not ranked. Check each provider’s page for current prices before you decide.
- Cloudways. Managed cloud hosting for Magento starting at $11 a month, on a choice of DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS or Google Cloud infrastructure, billed pay-as-you-go with no long-term contract, as listed on 5 November 2026. Suits teams that want a managed layer on top of a cloud provider they choose.
- Nexcess. Managed Magento hosting; its XS plan lists 50 GB storage, 1,000 GB bandwidth and Elasticsearch for Magento 2.4 and later, as listed on 5 November 2026. The page did not show prices when we read it, so check its plans page.
- Tremhost. Three routes, priced in US dollars. Unmanaged KVM VPS with dedicated cores, NVMe storage and full root, from $15 a month, with KVM 4 (6 cores, 8 GB RAM, 120 GB) at $25 and KVM 5 (6 cores, 16 GB, 140 GB) at $30, in Johannesburg, New York, Miami, Limburg or Roubaix, for teams that run their own Magento stack. A managed cPanel VPS from $80 a month, with LiteSpeed, CloudLinux, Imunify360 and backups run by Tremhost technicians. And managed e-commerce from $1,000 a year, where Tremhost sets up, hosts and maintains a Magento, WooCommerce or Shopify store, with payments including Paynow configured.
How to size a server for Magento
There is no single correct size, because it depends on catalogue size, extensions, traffic and whether search and cache run on the same machine. As a working approach:
- Start from your Magento version’s requirements and list every service you will run.
- Give the search engine and database their own memory headroom; they suffer first when RAM runs short.
- Put Varnish in front and measure how many requests reach PHP.
- Load-test category, search and checkout pages on staging before a promotion.
- Watch CPU, memory and swap for two weeks after launch and resize before peaks, not during them.
What Magento hosting really costs
The hosting invoice is only one line in a Magento budget. Add the time someone spends applying security patches and version upgrades, paid extensions and their renewals, development work after each upgrade, payment gateway fees, a web application firewall, off-server backups, and monitoring. Magento Open Source is free to download; Adobe Commerce is a paid licence, priced by Adobe. When you compare an unmanaged server with a managed service, compare the server price plus the cost of the hours your team will spend running it, because that labour is usually the larger figure for a busy store.
Which option fits your situation?
| Your situation | What to prioritise |
|---|---|
| In-house Magento developers and a DevOps person | An unmanaged VPS or cloud server with dedicated cores and full root |
| Developers but no server administrator | A managed Magento or managed cloud platform |
| No technical team, store must just work | A fully managed e-commerce service that handles patches and updates |
| Customers mainly in Southern Africa | A server in Johannesburg and a working local payment integration |
| Small catalogue, simple needs | Consider whether WooCommerce or a hosted platform would cost less to run |
Frequently asked questions
Can Magento run on shared hosting?
Rarely well. Magento needs services such as a search engine and caching layers, plus SSH and cron, that ordinary shared plans often do not provide.
Do I need Varnish for Magento?
Adobe lists Varnish in the supported stack, and a full-page cache makes a large difference to speed under load. Most production stores use one.
How do I protect a Magento store from attacks?
Apply security patches promptly, limit admin access, use two-factor authentication and put a web application firewall in front. Tremhost Armor Guard adds Cloudflare Pro, configured and monitored, for $9 a month.
Is Magento the right platform for my store?
It suits large catalogues, complex pricing and multi-store setups. Smaller stores often find WooCommerce or a hosted platform cheaper to build and run.
