Best Green Web Hosting: How to Check the Claims in 2026

What green web hosting claims actually mean, how to verify them independently and what to compare, with a short factual shortlist.

By Tremhost Africa Updated November 5, 2026 5 min read

The best green web hosting is hosting whose environmental claims you can verify, not the plan with the most leaves on its logo. Look for a clear statement of how the provider’s electricity use is matched or supplied with renewable energy, evidence such as a third-party certification or a listing in an independent dataset, and honesty about what the provider does not yet do. Then compare the hosting itself on price, performance and support, as you would any other plan.

This is Tremhost’s own blog, and Tremhost is one of the providers listed. Facts about other providers below come only from their own websites, the list is alphabetical and no provider is ranked or named the winner.

What makes web hosting genuinely green?

How renewable energy is sourced

What to check: whether the provider buys renewable electricity directly, matches its use with renewable energy certificates (RECs), or relies on its data centre operator’s energy contracts. Why it matters: these are different things. A REC represents a unit of renewable electricity added to the grid somewhere; it does not mean the servers themselves run on wind or solar. Both can be legitimate, but the claim should say which one applies.

Matching level and scope

What to check: what percentage of electricity is matched, and whether it covers only servers or also offices and data centre cooling. Why it matters: “100% renewable” for servers alone is a narrower claim than it sounds, and a claim above 100% means more certificates are bought than electricity is used, so ask what the extra certificates fund.

Offsets versus reductions

What to check: whether the provider relies on carbon offsets or tree planting, and whether it also measures and reduces its own emissions. Why it matters: offsets compensate for emissions elsewhere; they do not reduce what the hosting itself uses. A provider that publishes a measured footprint and a reduction plan is making a stronger claim.

Independent verification

What to check: third-party certifications, government programmes or a listing in an independent dataset. Why it matters: anyone can write “eco-friendly” on a web page. The Green Web Foundation’s Green Web Check looks up the IP address a domain uses, matches it to a hosting provider, and shows a green result only when that provider has shared evidence about its energy; a grey result means the address could not be linked to such evidence.

The hosting itself

What to check: price after renewal, storage type, backups, support hours, data centre location and payment methods. Why it matters: a green host that is too slow, too far from your visitors or impossible to pay from your country will not serve your business.

A shortlist of hosts to compare

Listed alphabetically, not ranked. Claims and prices change, so read the linked page and ask for evidence before you buy.

  • GreenGeeks. States that it purchases renewable energy credits equal to 300 percent of its consumption, through the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, and that it has been an EPA Green Power Partner since 2009, as listed on 5 November 2026. Suits buyers who want a shared host with a long-standing, clearly described REC programme.
  • Krystal (UK). States that its hosting is matched 100% with renewable energy, that it has been a Certified B Corp since 2023 and is working toward recertification, and, notably, that it is not carbon neutral and will not claim to be until it has evidence, as listed on 5 November 2026. Suits UK and European buyers who value transparency about what is and is not yet achieved.
  • Tremhost. Does not sell green-certified hosting and does not publish renewable energy figures, so it makes no environmental claim here. Its shared hosting and email run on servers in Europe and the USA, and VPS and dedicated servers are available in Johannesburg, New York, Miami, Limburg and Roubaix, as listed on the data centres page. What it does offer that is relevant to a lighter website is efficient delivery: LiteSpeed and NVMe on every web hosting plan, and Cloudflare caching through Armor Guard, which serves static files from Cloudflare’s network instead of the origin server. If a verified renewable claim is a requirement for you, check the providers above or any other host with the Green Web Check before you buy.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • Is your renewable claim based on direct supply, certificates or your data centre operator’s contracts?
  • Which facilities and which share of your electricity does it cover?
  • Who verifies it, and where can I read the evidence?
  • Do you publish a measured carbon footprint, and what is your reduction plan?
  • Which data centre will my site be in, and is that location covered by the claim?

How to make any website lighter

Whichever host you choose, the size of your website affects how much data is transferred and processed for every visit. These steps cut page weight and also make sites faster for visitors on mobile data:

  • Compress and resize images before uploading, and use modern formats such as WebP.
  • Remove unused plugins, themes and tracking scripts.
  • Turn on page caching so the server does not rebuild every page for every visitor.
  • Use a CDN for static files so they travel a shorter distance.
  • Avoid auto-playing video and large background images.
  • Delete old backups, staging copies and media you no longer use.

Which option should you choose? A decision guide

  • A verified renewable claim is a must: shortlist providers that pass the Green Web Check and publish how their energy is matched, then compare price and support.
  • You want the most transparent claim: favour providers that publish what they have not yet achieved alongside what they have.
  • Your visitors are in Zimbabwe and you need local payment: weigh location, payment and support alongside the environmental claim, and make your site lighter whichever host you use.
  • You run a large site: ask the provider for its data centre operator’s energy reporting, not just a marketing page.

Frequently asked questions

Does green hosting make my website carbon neutral?

Not on its own. Your site’s footprint also includes visitors’ devices and networks. Green hosting addresses the server side; a lighter site reduces the rest.

Are renewable energy certificates a real benefit?

They fund renewable generation added to the grid, but they do not mean your server is powered directly by renewables. Treat them as one part of a provider’s approach.

How can I check whether my current host is green?

Enter your domain in the Green Web Foundation’s Green Web Check. A green result means your host has shared evidence with the foundation; a grey result means it has not been linked to such evidence.
