The best Drupal hosting is a platform that meets your Drupal version’s technical requirements, gives your developers the tools Drupal is built around (Composer, Drush and separate development, staging and live copies), and fits your budget and in-house skills. Specialist Drupal platforms do much of this for you at a higher price; a general VPS or cPanel host can run Drupal well if your team configures it. Start with the requirements, then compare.
This is Tremhost’s own blog, and Tremhost is one of the providers listed. We have used only facts each provider publishes on its own website, and we have not ranked anyone.
What makes hosting good for Drupal?
1. Supported PHP and database versions
What to check: the PHP and database versions on the server. Why: Drupal will not install on older versions. According to Drupal.org’s announcement of the Drupal 11 requirements, as listed on 5 November 2026, Drupal 11 requires PHP 8.3 and at least MySQL 8.0, MariaDB 10.6, PostgreSQL 16 or SQLite 3.45. Check the requirements for the exact version you will run.
2. Composer, Drush and SSH access
What to check: whether you get SSH access and can run Composer and Drush. Why: modern Drupal sites are built and updated with Composer, and Drush is the standard command-line tool for updates, cache clears and deployments. Without them, maintenance becomes slow and error-prone.
3. Development, staging and live environments
What to check: whether you can keep separate copies of the site for development, testing and production, and move code and data between them. Why: Drupal configuration and module updates should be tested before they reach the live site.
4. Caching and a CDN
What to check: server-level caching, support for Redis or similar object caching, and a CDN. Why: Drupal pages are assembled from a database; caching makes a large difference to speed and server load, especially for anonymous visitors.
5. Security updates
What to check: who applies Drupal core and module security updates, and how quickly. Why: Drupal publishes security advisories regularly, and unpatched sites are a common target.
6. Backups and restores
What to check: frequency, retention and whether both files and database are included. Why: a failed update on a large Drupal site can be hard to reverse without a clean backup.
7. Pricing model
What to check: whether you pay per site, per visit, per server or for a fixed allowance, and what happens when traffic exceeds it. Why: visit-based pricing can rise quickly for busy sites.
8. Location, support and payment
What to check: data centre locations, support hours and accepted payment methods. Why: latency, data rules and your ability to pay and get help all affect day-to-day running.
Three ways to host Drupal
| Specialist Drupal platform | VPS with root access | Shared cPanel hosting | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who runs the server | The platform | You | The host |
| Dev, staging and live | Usually built in | You set them up | Limited; often manual |
| Composer and Drush | Supported | Install as you like | Depends on the host’s access |
| Caching and CDN | Usually included | You configure | Server cache; CDN optional |
| Typical cost | Highest | Moderate | Lowest |
| Best for | Teams that want a ready workflow | Skilled developers | Small, simple sites |
Whichever route you choose, keep Drupal core and modules updated, and test every update on a copy of the site first.
If you are moving an existing Drupal site, export the database, copy the files directory and the codebase (including composer.json and composer.lock), and run database updates and a cache rebuild with Drush on the new server before you switch DNS. Keep the old host running until the new copy has been checked page by page.
A shortlist of Drupal hosting options
Listed alphabetically, not ranked. Facts come from each provider’s own page on the date shown; check the live page before you buy.
Acquia
Acquia’s Cloud Platform page, as listed on 5 November 2026, describes fully managed hosting for enterprise Drupal, with development, staging and production environments for every application, managed patching and a platform CDN. It lists compliance controls including PCI DSS, SOC 2 and ISO 27001 and offers a free two-week trial. Prices are not published; plans depend on site count, traffic and compliance needs. Suits large organisations with enterprise budgets.
Pantheon
Pantheon’s pricing page, as listed on 5 November 2026, shows the Basic site plan at $55 a month or $500 a year, with development, staging and production environments, a global CDN and automated backups on all plans. Monthly visit allowances apply per plan, and a free workspace with two sandbox sites lets you build before paying to go live. Suits teams that want a Drupal-focused workflow without running servers.
Tremhost
Tremhost does not sell Drupal-specific hosting. What it offers that is relevant: cPanel web hosting from $30 a year with MySQL databases, LiteSpeed, NVMe storage and daily backups, where you choose the PHP version yourself (the Help Centre explains how to change your PHP version). Confirm with support that the PHP and database versions on the server meet your Drupal version’s requirements before you buy. For full control, unmanaged KVM VPS plans give root access to install Composer, Drush, Redis and any stack you choose, from $15 a month (2 dedicated cores, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe), in Johannesburg, New York, Miami, Limburg or Roubaix. Payment is in US dollars by EcoCash, InnBucks, ZimSwitch, Omari, Visa, Mastercard or cryptocurrency; support runs Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00 CAT.
Which Drupal hosting suits your situation?
- Enterprise or regulated organisation with a large budget: a specialist managed Drupal platform with published compliance controls.
- Agency or in-house team that wants a Drupal workflow without servers: a Drupal-focused platform with dev, staging and live environments.
- Developers comfortable running Linux: a VPS with root access, where you control PHP, the database, Composer, Drush and caching.
- A small, simple Drupal site on a tight budget: shared hosting can work if it meets the version requirements and gives you the access you need. Check before you buy.
- Visitors mainly in southern Africa: consider a server in Johannesburg to reduce latency.
Frequently asked questions
Can Drupal run on shared hosting?
It can, if the server meets the PHP and database requirements and you can run Composer. Many teams prefer a VPS or a specialist platform for anything beyond a small site.
Is Drupal hosting more expensive than WordPress hosting?
Specialist Drupal platforms tend to target larger organisations and are priced accordingly. On a general VPS or cPanel host, Drupal costs the same to host as any PHP application with similar traffic.
Do I need a staging site for Drupal?
It is strongly recommended. Test core and module updates and configuration changes on staging before applying them to the live site.
Next step
Write down your Drupal version, its requirements, your expected traffic and who will maintain the site, then compare each provider on its own page. If a VPS with full root access in Johannesburg suits your team, see Tremhost’s KVM VPS plans linked above, or ask the team on WhatsApp on +263 73 563 9917 which versions a plan supports.
