Choosing a hosting provider in Zimbabwe comes down to ten questions, and the cheapest headline price often fails half of them. Hosting is the one service your website, email, and reputation all depend on, and switching later costs time. Ask these before you pay.
1. Is the price the same at renewal?
Many hosts advertise a low first-year price and charge much more at renewal. Ask for the renewal price in writing. At Tremhost, [confirm policy: the price you sign up at is the price you renew at].
2. Can I pay the way I actually pay?
A host that only takes international cards is a problem for most Zimbabwean businesses. Check for USD payment by EcoCash, InnBucks, ZIPIT, bank transfer, and local cards — and that invoices come from a company you can hold accountable.
3. When is support available, and how do I reach it?
“24/7 support” often means a ticket form. Ask what hours they operate in Harare time, whether you can reach a person on WhatsApp, and how long the first reply takes. Write it down; you’ll need it the day your site goes down.
4. Where are the servers?
Server location affects visitor speed and, for some data, your obligations under Zimbabwe’s Cyber and Data Protection Act. A good provider tells you plainly.
5. What happens to my email?
Most hosting plans include email on your domain. Check how many mailboxes you get, how much storage you have, and whether SPF, DKIM, and DMARC are set up so your mail doesn’t land in spam.
6. Are backups automatic — and who restores them?
Ask how often backups run, how long they’re kept, and whether the provider restores them for you or leaves you to do it.
7. What security is included?
At minimum: free SSL that renews automatically, malware scanning, and protection against common attacks. Ask what happens if your site is hacked — is cleanup included, or billed separately?
8. Can I upgrade without moving?
Your site will grow. Check that you can move from shared hosting to a bigger plan or a VPS without a migration fee or downtime.
9. Will they move my existing site?
A good provider migrates your website and email for you and tests everything before switching DNS. Ask if it’s free.
10. Do I own my domain and content?
Your domain should be registered in your name, and you should be able to take your site and email elsewhere at any time.
