I believe that Religion is not something we should follow blindly. In as much as faith and logic are not supposed to be applied at once, i strongly feel we should apply them one after another. Why? Well because if you believe in something that you know nothing about, It’s quite difficult to develop a personal relationship with that thing. So its like you believe but you do not know and as such you are already at the verge of not believing because you already do no know what it is you are doing and why. It’s like being in a relationship where you know absolutely nothing about the one whom you claim to love; and it’s not practical, the relationship will not last. I’m not saying that we can get to understand everything about God because even the bible says that we can never be able to fully understand Him. However I’m simply trying to say that we need some sort of understanding of who really God is and what our religious beliefs entail, knowing the history of our faith etc because even the Bible says that we should be able to defend our faith and we cannot do that of we know nothing concrete about it.

Christianity (our main focus) has a lot of practises and traditions that are associated with it for instance Easter, Christmas etc and in as much as most of us keep these ritual celebrations holy, we understand almost nothing of what they mean and where they came from. We only know what our ministers preach to us or tell us during these festivities and nothing more. Most of us celebrate these days, as holidays, some as religious rituals while for some it is just one of those days that we get to celebrate because everyone is doing so. But have you ever stopped to think about how these rituals came to be, where the dates came from etc. In this article I’m going to focus closely on a ritual that most of the world celebrates but knows very little about, Christmas and its link to the birth of Jesus.

What is Christmas?

It is an annual feast or celebration to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ the founder of Christianity.The word itself comes from Middle English Cristemasse, which in turn comes from Old English Cristes-messe, literally meaning Christ’s Mass. So the word itself is actually two words in one, where ” Christ “comes from the Greek word χριστός (chrīstós), meaning “anointed one” and the second part of the word ” mas “(maesse) – is a version of the Latin word missa, the celebration of the Eucharist tradition of eating bread and drinking wine in memory of Jesus. So this breaks down the meaning of the word itself and actually gives us an insight of what its all about , celebrating Jesus Christ.

So basically this is what the word Christmas in itself means including its etymology, but the question still remains; Where did all this idea about Christmas come from, who started it, when and why.

The birth of Jesus.

Christmas as we all have come to believe is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Now, as we all know, we celebrate the birthday of a person on the day they where actually born, but is it really the case with Jesus? Well probably not. According to Historical analysis and facts, no one actually knows when exactly Jesus was born because at that time, only important records of possibly kings and the aristocrats where kept and we can all agree that Jesus was not in any of those categories, he was just an ordinary child. However they estimate the time around which he was born to have probably been around 6BC and 4BC. This is according to information given in the Gospel passages in the Bible. Matthew 2:1 states that “Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king”.Luke 1:5 also mentions the reign of Herod shortly before the birth of Jesus,^[4] and places the birth during the Census of Quirinius, which the Jewish historian Josephus described as taking place circa AD 6 in his book Antiquities of the Jews (written c. AD 93). So this biblical evidence is then used to place the birth of Jesus between 6BC and 4BC.

The actual date now is something that has been subject to debate for most historians as there is nowhere where it is actually recorded in the Bible or other traditional scripts. However according to some scholars, based on the issue of the shepherds herding their sheep at night, they generally agree that the birth could most likely have been around spring, arguing that it is impossible for people to be out at night herding their flock using the simple but relevant logic that winter is generally cold and few people are to be found at night during winter as well as considering that during this time most of the sheep would be having newly born lambs and as such they would be out with the new lambs feeding them.

Some people also use the astrological evidence of the Star in the East to explain the date around which Jesus was born. According to Matthew’s gospel, The Magi were guided to Bethlehem by a star they had seen in the north and followed which was believed to signify the birth of a King according to Ancient Near East asa well as Ancient Israelites’ belief . Astrological studies have however given a lot of different possibilities to this end most of which range the birth to around spring or summer either 7BC to around 4BC. To some however the issue of the star remains more of an object of faith rather than a real pointer to the birth date of Jesus, as there is a lot of debate surrounding its significance and applicability tot he other factors that account for when Jesus was born. Basically then the exact date and season when Jesus was born is unknown but through study and research, most Historians agree that probably between 7 and 4BC (not earlier than 4 BC) around spring.

The accuracy of 25 December as the date Jesus was born.

As is widely held by most people the birth of Jesus took place on the 25th of December but this view is historically and logically wrong. Firstly, logically speaking no one knows when exactly Jesus was born and the highest point of reference for the birth which is the Bible mentions nothing in line with the exact date let alone year. Secondly, historically speaking no evidence whatsoever points to 25 December as being the real birth day of Jesus. Historians have over the years actually failed to prove the exact year that Jesus was born as mentioned earlier thus to assume that they could come up with a day and fail to decipher the year is academically impossible given the evidence they have. Lastly, considering the fact that during the time of Jesus, the Israelites used the Hebrew calendar which is different from the Gregorian calendar, used at present by most of the world which actually came after the Julian calendar thus going back we can realise that there may have been plus or minus five different calendars introduced to date form the time Jesus was born thus to safely conclude that Jesus was born on exactly 25 December is academically wrong especially given these many disparities in time measurements as well as no written evidence or other historically relevant evidence to support this date.

Where did 25 December come from?

The date 25 December should therefore have emerged form somewhere by someone. It is very important to note that for the first three centuries of Christianity they did not celebrate the birth of Jesus probably because they actually did not know when exactly he was born. So where did 25 December come from then.

According to Historians ,Archaeologists as well as some Theologians, this date was adopted from the Christians’ heathen rivals who celebrated 25 December as a festival honouring their Sun God. According to records, the Julian calendar considered 25 December as their winter solstice and it was regarded as the Nativity of the Sun, because the day begins to lengthen and the power of the sun to increase from that turning-point of the year. So the Pagans held a festival where they celebrated the Nativity of the Unconquered Sun, Mithra and the virgin who conceived him was regarded an oriental Goddess whom the Semites called the Heavenly Virgin or simply the Heavenly Goddess; in Semitic lands she was a form of Astarte. This ritual or festival was highly regarded and celebrated all through the Pagan world and some scholars even argue that some early Christians would join in on theses celebrations since some of them may have originally been pagans who converted to Christianity.

Originally the Christians celebrated Christmas on the 6th of January for reasons unknown, a tradition that was only limited to the Christians in Egypt and around the East. It is only in 336AD during the time of Emperor Constantine that 25th of December first appeared on a Roman calendar as the official celebration of the Nativity of Jesus. It is believed that the early Church Fathers may have adopted this date since most Christians knew the importance and partook in the Pagans’ festival of the Nativity of their Sun God thus it would be fairly easy for them to transfer that same allegiance to their own religion and continue celebrating this festival but honouring the Creator of the Sun and not the Sun itself. They also did this according to some, as a way of ensuring that most pagans would convert to Christianity, by seemingly honouring their festival but in a different fashion. This is clearly mentioned by Augustine when he exhorts his Christian brethren not to celebrate that solemn day like the heathen on account of the sun, but on account of him who made the sun. In like manner Leo the Great rebuked the pestilent belief that Christmas was solemnised because of the birth of the new sun, as it was called, and not because of the nativity of Christ. Therefore this school of thought holds that Christmas was actually borrowed from the Pagan practise of honouring their Sun god on the 25th of December.

There is however a second but less popular view that accounts for the use of 25 December as the day of Jesus’ birth.Around 200 C.E. Tertullian of Carthage presented the calculation that the 14th of Nisan (the day of the crucifixion according to the Gospel of John) in the year Jesus died was equivalent to March 25 in the Roman (solar) calendar. Now according to ancient Israelite belief a prophet was conceived into the after life the exact same day he was conceived in this present life. Therefore applying this theory one would assume that Jesus was conceived on the 25th of March and calculating exactly nine months from there, we get to the 25th of December and thus some argue for 25 December using this angle as well. Although it would require one to then look at it from an angle of faith rather than logic.

It is generally difficult to account for the birth of Jesus and link it directly back to Christmas day, 25 December. However I have tried to make us logically understand the history behind these given dates as well as the reasons why it is quite difficult to account for the specific details regarding the birth of this very influential figure. Above all else however, when logic has been tried, tested and given due regard we then refer back to our faith to understand that which the mind cannot comprehend and deduce.

Christmas is a day of remembering the birth of Jesus, a figure every Christian far and wide regards with awe and reverence. 25 December may not be the real Christmas but its historical and religious value to today’s Christian remains greater than all other things. There is mass extraction of oil in the marine world has led to dramatic bad effects in it. Human activities have by more than 50 percent badly altered the way of life in these oceans. Before we carry an environment changing activities, it is good to remember that the Earth is not entirely our own but we have co-ownership with plants and animals. They also have a right to live comfortably on their home. Our activities are leading to the extinction of these other co-owners. But it will do us good to note that without them, our earth cannot function well as these organisms play a vital role in its functioning well.Nature plays a critical role in providing humans with energy and medicines. More than two billion people rely on wood to meet their primary energy needs, for example, while an estimated four billion people are dependent on natural medicines for their healthcare. The use of fertilizers is increasing as the farming sectors are also increasing.Since n the early 1930s fertilizers have helped farmers increase their food production. More amounts of fertilizers are being put into the soil to try and make it produce more than before.The problem is that these fertilizers have negative effects on soils if they are used many times without giving room for the soil to correct itself naturally. Mismanagement of these fertilizers cause harmful effects on the plants and animals including humans.

Garbage dumping is one of the most common cause of land pollution. The amount of garbage per household is ever increasing and these are dumped on land. Areas where these dumping are done release toxic substances in the soil making it unfit for farming and other profitable land uses.

Another cause of land pollution is from mines. Mines usually dump their waste material on land making it inhabitable by wildlife and even humans. Abandoned machinery and mining sites pollute the land. Some of these wastes release gases into the soil which do not promote plant growth. This will lead to the dying of vegetation in those areas. Animal life will also decrease in such areas as there would not be sources of food for them to survive.

Water Pollution

Algae blooms in water bodies, is a result of the mismanagement of fertilizers which find their way to these bodies most of the time. This will lead to depletion of oxygen in the surface of the water. An example of this is Lake Chivero in Harare which has an increasing percentage of algae covered surfaces. Plastic pollution in water bodies has been on the rise due to the increase in population. Many people are dumping plastics in water bodies and these plastic prevent sunlight which is greatly needed by aquatic animals and plants to make their food and for survival.

Even if the plastics are not dumped in rivers, they usually find their way to water bodies as they are usually dumped on undesignated areas..This is making the water unsafe for human and wildlife consumption. Industries are dumping more and more toxic waste into water ways nowadays. How they’re evading the environmental laws is left for us to wonder. These wastes are increasing the number of water bodies’ “dead zones”. Aquatic life is killed and bad smells are emitted from this. Again we are moving the Doomsday’s clock minute hand by a couple of seconds or minutes.

It is no wonder that we benefit greatly from the mining sector. Jobs are created, beautiful jewellery is made and economies are making millions of dollars from minerals. Despite all that, we are killing and pushing our beautiful home to its limit when we conduct this activity. The environmental effects of mining are not only experienced locally but also regionally and globally. Some of the mining processes affect the atmosphere and thus affecting the quality of life for humans, animals and plants. Nearby water bodies are also affected by these mining activities. This means that we are killing the aquatic life which we depend on for food and medication purposes. The quality of water is disturbed when the mining companies deposit their waste into water bodies. We greatly depend on safe, uncontaminated water for our daily needs. Therefore when it is unsafe, what are we do? The frequency of volcanoes and earthquakes is also contributed to by mining activities such as dynamite blasts. Yes, maybe the volcano was gonna happen anyway, but when we shake the earth with such a force and many times, we are making it happen today instead of tomorrow. We are pushing toward the limit of our home in a faster way.

Climate change is caused by the factors mentioned above. To be able to reduce the effects of climate change, we must first solve the problems mentioned above. Because of our activities, our home is now becoming unpredictable. Each day we have a 50/50 chance of experiencing the worst weather conditions ever. We are not able to correctly predict our climate conditions for tomorrow, so how can we prepare? That is why many countries are facing the problem of food shortages because they do not know what to prepare for.

Greenhouse gases occur naturally and are essential to the survival of humans and millions of other living things, by keeping some of the sun’s warmth from reflecting back into space and making Earth livable. But after more than a century and a half of industrialization, deforestation, and large scale agriculture, quantities of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have risen to record levels not seen in three million years. Which kind of car would one choose between a new model and a second hand model? I’m sure most of us would opt for the new model and I’m not going to bash that view because its highly accurate. However i personally want to carry out an analysis on what would be the best model to choose taking all factors into consideration.

Advantages of a new car.

Warranty guaranteed.

This is the biggest advantage of a new car. You are guaranteed of a warrant for a specific period of time and you can claim this within the given time frame.This means that if you incur a fault with your new vehicle you are able to go back to the car dealer and either get a new vehicle, a refund or any other compensation as stated in the conditions of purchase contract or form. This highly unlike used cars where there is no warranty at all and usually if a fault occurs with the car during the early days after purchase some car dealers may actually refuse to refund you or give you a new vehicle. Thus you end up spending a lot more money on car repairs after purchase. So in this regard it is better to purchase a new vehicle.

The car isn’t used.

This may sound funny but its actually a great advantage to some people. A new car is generally new in terms of everything. There are no funny smells, damages or other stains or signs of wear and tear, thus you don’t have to worry about repairing your car soon after purchase or even in the next year or so because it will still be brand new. Unlike a used car, where it might come with a few patches that need fixing or some bad smells inside that may need to be dealt with all of which may cost more than just buying a brand new car.

Technological advancement.

New cars especially those being manufactured nowadays are basically more advanced in terms of technology as compared to older version, therefore where one wants to get a technologically advanced car, the best choice is a new car because that way you can get the latest version with the technology you need.Depending on which trim package you select, you will get access to the newest and most advanced technologies.

Service.

Compared to a used car, a new car is actually going to need service after probably a lot more kilometers of travel because everything there is still new and unused thus its durability is longer than that of a used car. So a new car’s consumables (batteries, rubber bits, plastic bits, filters and so on) won’t need expensive attention for your first few years of ownership. Which means you don’t have to worry about the costs of maintenance for the first few years unlike a used car where you probably have to start maintaining it from like the first month after purchase and this is more costly.

There are also disadvantages to buying a new car.

Depreciation. New cars tend to depreciate faster that old ones as studies have shown.Edmund estimates a car loses 11% of its total value as soon as you drive it off the lot. By the time you’ve paid off the five-year loan, the car will be worth, on average, about 40 percent of its original value.Thus this presents a huge disadvantage of new cars.

unknown reliability.No one really knows the reliability of a new car in terms of stability, speed and whether or not it can withstand some rough roads or high speeds thus purchasing it is like actually gambling and hoping you will win.

Expensive. New cars are generally more expensive than used cars.

Advantage of buying a used car.

Cost effective.

This is generally the biggest advantage of a used car. The fact that i can purchase the same vehicle for much less than the cost of a brand new one. This just makes it better than a new one besides a few polish ups here and there. So you can actually buy a used car for half the price of a new one. So if you really need a car but you can’t afford a brand new one, then you should consider buying a used one.

Avoid Taxation.

So unlike a new version or car, when you purchase a second hand vehicle you have the privilege of not paying tax depending though on the car dealer you buy from. So you save more money than what you would have used to purchase a new vehicle.

Low rate of breaking down.

A used car is used to being on the road and is better adapted to long distances and probably many types of roads thus the risk of it breaking down while traveling is fairly low as compare to a new car that is new to the road.The engine has a long history of periodic fixing every time the owner visits the garage. Buying a used car will save you the fear to drive faster and perform different stunts on the road, because you are confident that the car has adapted to these speeds and stunts over time.

Decent condition of used car nowadays.

Recently people have begun to sell used that cars that are in very decent conditions, that is to say some may actually be scratch free and look almost new new. There is therefore now a very small difference between a used car and a new one in terms of general outside appearance, so one can safely opt for a used car instead of a brand new one.

However there are also disadvantages to buying a used car and these include;

Warranty. Some of these cars may not come with a warranty unless they are still under manufacturer’s warranty and also those with warrants may be limited to only a few months thus mechanical costs and others are left entirely to you.

Reliability.Used cars tend to be less reliable in the sense that they require more service and maintenance than new cars and may put the driver at risk if the car has a history of maybe accidents and break downs.

Although these points are not all the pros and cons of used and brand new cars, they actually help one in deciding whether to purchase a used or a brand new vehicle. I think it is very clear that the choice one will make is highly based on the amount of money you are willing to spend on the car as well as your personal preference. Although i would recommend a used car considering above all the fact that nowadays they come in almost brand new qualities thus you stand to gain more than someone purchasing a new car.

When one owns a car, he should make sure that the car has a regular service. This is important as there are certain parts that require changing after a certain period or after the car has traveled a certain number of mileages. Not doing this will result in the car breaking down from small and simple things that could have been avoided by servicing the car. When a car should be serviced depends on the type and use of the car, therefore you can check with garages or the car manual to know when to service it. If you know a lot about cars, you can do the simple servicing on your own but if you have doubts about your capabilities, send it to a garage. A full car service is complex and it can include up to 50 or things components.

The cost of fuel per litter will depend on the area you live in.The amount of fuel you will need will be determined by the total number of litters your tank can carry. Roads also determine the amount of fuel you will need.Bad roads with lots of potholes will require more fuel than good roads.The percentage of budget dedicated to fuel might vary from time to time depending on the number of journeys you are taking. Amount of fuel needed can is also determined by the number of litters per kilometer/ mile that your car uses.

Insurance

Not many love to pay insurances. But is it a must to pay car insurance when you have a car. The insurance charges vary from place to place and the charges of the Insurance companies. In many countries,you are not allowed to drive in public roads when you do not have an insurance. Note that the insurance will expire after a certain period, therefore be sure to pay after the last one has expired if you want to be able to drive freely in public roads without fearing for patrolling police.

Storage/ Security

When you own a car, you have to make sure that there is good security to keep your car safe from theft.That will mean that you will need to have a guarded house, or you will need to have a well secured house maybe with an alarm system. If you do not have this,you might use car parks and will need to budget parking money for every night.The parking expense will differ from place to place or from one car park to another. This can be expensive but its all for the protection of your car. You can also put an alarm system on your car to reduce the risk of theft. This is usually expensive for low and middle income earners.You are also likely to incur the cost of child security when you have little children or later when you will have them.

Maintenance

Many car accidents are due to the lack of car maintenance by their owners. People tend to forget that there are things that need to be changed on the car from time to time. For example, tires.On the car manual, it is written when the tires must be changed or after how much traveling they must be changed but it is usually ignored and many are likely to change them only after it has burst.There are also things that will need to be changed from time to time like sit covers and others. When you do not have the time, you are supposed to pay others for the service of deep cleaning your car.

Registration, Taxes, Miscellaneous

When you buy your car, there are certain taxes and registration fees you must pay to the government. For example here in Zimbabwe, when you buy your car out of the country, you are supposed to pay duty fees on the border. After having the car, you must pay for the acquisition of the license plate number. But it does not end there because you have to pay parking fees when you park into the Central Business District. There is a fixed charge for a certain amount of time for parking there. This charge changes with inflation or deflation.When you are entering a new town or city you are supposed to pay a toll gate fee when you own a car. The total expense will depend on the number of toll gates you pass through on your journey. When you fail to follow and obey road rules, you are charged. The police is likely to send a ticket for failing to follow these rules.

Although you don’t make a monthly payment for depreciation, cars do lose value over time, which affects your total cost of ownership. In their first year, cars lose around 20% to 30% of their value.
