How to Get a Refund from Apple App Store Purchases

Bought an app, in-app feature, or subscription from the Apple App Store and it wasn’t what you expected? Maybe it didn’t work, was purchased by mistake, or you were charged unexpectedly. Good news: Apple has a clear refund process, and you can usually request a refund right from your device or computer. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Go to Apple’s “Report a Problem” Page

  • Open a web browser and visit reportaproblem.apple.com.
  • Log in with your Apple ID and password (the one you used for the purchase).

Step 2: Find Your Purchase

  • After logging in, you’ll see a list of your recent purchases.
  • Scroll to find the app, song, movie, subscription, or in-app purchase you want a refund for.

Step 3: Request a Refund

  • Click the “Report a Problem” button next to the purchase.
  • In the drop-down menu, select “Request a refund”.
  • Choose a reason (e.g., “I didn’t mean to buy this,” “Item didn’t work as expected,” “Unauthorized purchase”).
  • Add any details if prompted, then submit your request.

Step 4: Wait for Apple’s Response

  • Apple usually reviews refund requests within 48 hours (sometimes much faster).
  • You’ll get an email with the decision and, if approved, your refund will be processed to your original payment method. Timing depends on your bank or card provider.

Extra Tips & Things to Know

  • Subscriptions: You can request a refund for recent subscription charges—just be sure to cancel unwanted subscriptions as well.
  • Family Sharing: If you’re part of a Family Sharing group, the family organizer may need to submit the request.
  • Refund Approval: Refunds are not guaranteed. Apple reviews your account history and the reason for the request.
  • Accidental Purchases by Kids: Be honest about what happened. Apple is usually understanding, especially for first-time mistakes.

On Your iPhone or iPad (Optional Method)

  1. Open the App Store app.
  2. Tap your profile icon (top right).
  3. Tap Purchased or Subscriptions to find your purchase.
  4. Tap the purchase, then Report a Problem (this will take you to the reportaproblem.apple.com site above).

In Summary:
Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, find your purchase, and request a refund with a brief explanation. Apple’s system is user-friendly, and most legitimate requests are processed quickly.
